TEAM 2013

Dave Wyatt - Skipper of the Velocity.  Has been fishing and surfing the West Coast of Tasmania for over 20 years. Steve Gould - Skipper of the Dimantina III.  Has been fishing  the West and South Coasts of Tasmania for over 20 years. His knowledge of the hidden reefs in the Southwest make him an invaluable member of the team. Many Thanks to Ralph for the use of his boat.

Darren Clark - Skipper of the Breaksea.  Has been fishing  the West and South Coasts of Tasmania for over 20 years. Darren is a Abolone Diver who's tradional canoe stern boat the Breaksea is one of a few tradional wooden boats still working the waters of the South West.

Matt Dell - Matt along with Dave has been involved with organising Marine Debris surveys of the South West Tasmanian WHA for over 10 years. Matt is a cartographer, photographer and keen surfer.

Nick Harris - Nick has been working on the west coast as a cray and abalone deckhand for the last 10 years. Harry is a keen fisherman and surfer and returns for his second Marine Debris Cleanup. His expertise in the Zodiac will be handy for those tricky beach landings.

Masaaki Koyama - Masaaki is a master sushi chef who has been trying to down the knives and head around the coast with us for a couple of years now. Masaaki is a keen fisherman and surfer with a love of all the fine things Tassie has to offer.

Lou Chasemore - Lou has been playing around with boats for much of the last 10 years. She has just returned from a season working on large charter boats in the Carribean.

Ido Lutterel - Ido is a keen surfer from Bruny Island. Ido currently works for Pennicott Wilderness Journeys and is experiencing the South West for the first time.

Helen Coad -  Helen is a another first time South West adventurer. Helen currently works at the Italian Pantry and has been yearning to join her good friend SP on the cleanup mission.

Kane Bowman - Kane is a keen surfer and qualified PADI dive instructor. Kane works as a skipper for Pennicott Wilderness Journeys and is super exited be taking part in this adventure

Claire Butler - Claire is a student studying Geology at the University of Tasmania. Claire is a very keen bushwalker and orienteerer and after her supreme rubbish cleaning and counting skills on the 2012 cleanup we are happy to have her back.

Andrew Harbinson - aka Harbs is on his second cleanup mission this year. After spending many years in his youth sailing and adventuring in the bush of his home state is very keen to get back amongst it after 20 years in the Rat Race. Works in sales for AWM Electrical Wholesale in Hobart and has managed to survive by continuing his passion for music playing Bass & Guitar in several sucessful Hobart bands over the years including The Fat Band, Guilty as Charged, Fabio Chivhanda and Radiofire. The instruments and recording gear are locked and loaded for some jams from the Deep South.

Sarah Proud -  Sarah is joining us for her third consecutive cleanup this year. Working hard behind the scenes ‘SP’ has organised some fundraising events for the trip involving local musicians, DJ’s and artists. SP’s high calibre of work ethic has been nurtured over many years in hospitality culminating in her current position at the illustrious MONA and MOO BREW (who have kindly agree to sponsor the trip again this year.)

Ula Majewski - Ula has been a Tassie forest campaigner for the past 7 years, apart from a 9 month stint volunteering for a local women's advocacy organisation in the wilds of Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia, in 2009. She currently works as Campaign Manager for The Last Stand and likes beaches, trees, surf and other fine things.

Vica Bayley - Vica is an environmental campaigner for the Wilderness Society and keen sea kayaker . Growing upon a farm in SE Tassie and now living in Hobart he has a love for Tassie and its environment, terrestrial and marine. This will be his first marine debris clean-up and first trip along the south and west coasts for over a decade, previously paddling to Port Davey and back and working a season as a deckhand on a cray boat

Mel Sheppard - Mel is a keen bushwalker, climber and beachcomber who is currently running her own ZenThai Shiatsu and Relaxation massage business. Mel has considerable remote area work and first aid experience.

Albert Wyatt - Youngest of Dave Wyatts four children, Albert is a talented musician and just discovering the Joys of surfing. Albert will be doing a daily blog for the Expedition Class website.

Steve Heggie - Steve is the Northern Regional Manager for Bush Heritage Australia and current reserve manager at the 1770 reserve at Agnes Water in northern QLD. His outdoor experience, boat handling skills and remote area first aid skills make him an ideal addition to the team.

Andrew Fazackerley - Zac is a 4 trip veteran responsible for team morale and is often found loitering in the kitchen or in the lineup surfing.

Joe Vukic - Jo is a local tradesman, musician and father of two. Jo has been a regular on the local "muso" scene for the majority of the past 20 years and has played drums for more acts than he can remember as well as numerous  interstate performances. Having bodyboarded around the island from a young age, Joe has developed a love and passion for the Tasmanian coastline and will be keen to see some new places and contribute to the cause.

Kent Way - Skipper of the Cheiftan G.  Has been fishing  the West and South Coasts of Tasmania for over 20 years. Kent has been helping with the cleanup since 2001. His happy friendly nature and knowledge of the coast makes him an invaluable part of the team.

Dayna Trevaskis - Dayna has been eagerly awaiting what has become an annual pilgrimage to the amazing Southwest, participating in her 5th cleanup this year. In between escapes to the wilderness, she hula-hoops, wrangles clay (ceramics), guides bushwalks and pays the bills as a practising architect.

Spikey Riddoch - Ex deckhand for the Chieftan G and veteran of many clean-ups, Spikey Riddoch dislikes writing in the third person. Spikey will don the wet weathers performing a cameo role aboard his old boat with Able Seawoman Sarah and Rooky Greenhorn Joe. He is currently an unemployed bum, chasing his passions of exploring, prospecting and running amok. Pressing financial concerns require him to get a bit more serious with his new business selling cast silver. Spikey holds the desputed record for rubbish sorting, with 3000 small pieces of plastic recovered. With a background in Mines Rescue and Search and Rescue, Spikey will be managing risk strategies and acting as Medic. He collects rocks, natural history books, safari suits and hangovers.

Johnny Abegg - Johnny is a Tassie expat now residing in Byron Bay. He is another Patagonia team rider who has traversed much of the Southwest on foot with his surfboard in one hand and video camera in the other. He will no doubt enjoy being droppoed on the beaches by zodiac rather than fighting through the notorious West coast scrub.

Glen Casey - Case is a renown big wave surfer from the south coast of Victoria and Brand Manager for Patagonia Australia. Case through Patagonia has organised the sponsorship for the cleanup for the last two years and this year will join us on the trip to see where the support goes.

Ben Arthur -  Ben is a marine biologist undertaking a PhD at UTas on the foraging behaviour and habitat use of Antarctic fur seals. A Hobartian all his life with a love for Tassie and its environment, this will be his first marine debris clean-up trip. Ben will be responsible for the daily blog to the students Expedition Class Website.

Miles Bruny - a Tasmanian born island boy, built a sea-kayak, learnt pigin, set his compass, and paddled. Cooking Norwegian fish on fires in the arctic circle: “the sun just never sets”. Queensland: “ummm..7m tides and tiger sharks”. South island of New Zealand and Tasmania, “bloody wild places and weather”. Circumnavigating New Caledonia: “fishing with Aboriginal Kanaks”. Vanuatu: “naked magic kastom tribes...like woawh.” The Solomon Islands: “Ancient paths of stories and spirits”. In the Nevada desert “I found god at Burning Man Festival” and so returned to Tasmania to build a rocket-ship. Does he have something to say to the world? “Stop shopping for "happiness", Get off the computer for "connections" and Get outside and cause trouble artfully!”

Richard White - Hailing from South Africa's sunny shores Richard has been involved in adventure tourism for much of his working life. Currently living in Tasmania and working as the the Operations Manager for The Maria Island Walk Richard has enjoyed a career leading and organizing birdwatching and naturalist tours throughout much of Africa, Asia, South America and Antarctica. While Richard is no stranger to volunteering (with migrants settling in Tasmania) 2012 was his first year of volunteer work cleaning beaches in Tasmania's stunning southwest. 


Joe Vukic - Joe is a local tradesman, musician and father of two. Dean Hulten - Deano has been participating in the cleanup for a number of years he is always keen for a bit of beachcombing and is a master on the Bass for the evening Jam.

Dayna Trevaskis - Dayna has been on 4 cleanups so far and is the music maestro collating a mix for the hard days on the beach which we load on to our MP3 players.  She has a great work ethic and always helps with the count of and evening so gets asked to come again each year.

Spikey Riddoch - Spikey returns for his Third cleanup trip and provides the emergency rescue and first aid support on the beach if needed due his long term involvement in the Tasmanian State Emergency Service. He is a keen bushwalker and videographer and is always on deck to count the rubbish.

Johnny Abegg - Johnny is a Tassie expat now residing in Byron Bay. Sarah Proud -  Sarah is one of the hardest workers I know and a damn fine cook. We look forward to hearing her guitar skills in the evening jam sessions

Ninna Millikin -  Ninna is a journalist and documentary film maker who has been working with the Bookend Trust. We tried to get her on the last trip but she had already commited to a stint at the National Folk Festival.

Marcos Gogolin - Marcos is a Brazilian expat now living and working in Tassie. He works at the TAFE teaching IT and runs a business providing housing to students called Look before you Leap. Marcos is a great cook and always quick to help out in the kitchen.

Emma Bugg - Emma is an accomplished artist and hard worker who will be helping out on the deck of Deano's cray boat with close friends Sarah and Dayna. Emma has just launched her new website Emma Bugg Jewellery . I am looking forward to seeing what she can make out of the treasures we pick up.

Ben Rea - Ben is a long time friend and outdoor enthusiast. He is a qualified outdoor education teacher and experienced waterman having previously paddled to Port Davey from Southport in a Sea Kayak .

Mary-Anne Lea - Dr Mary-Anne is a marine biologist who studies the foraging behaviour of Marine Mammals


Anais Schneider - Anais is a passionate environmental activist who has taken part in many Greenpeace campaigns.

Dean Hulten - Deano has been participating in the cleanup for a number of years he is always keen for a bit of beachcombing and is a master on the Bass for the evening Jam.

Nick Harris - Nick has been working on the west coast with Dave for the last 5 years he is a keen fisherman and surfer and has finally got his chance to come on the cleanup.

Matt Dell - I have been organising Marine Debris surveys of the South West Tasmanian WHA for over 10 years. To date we have recovered and itemised over 50000 pieces of Marine Debris off the beaches. This voluntary exercise is one of the longest running remote area marine debris surveys in Australia and has been recognised with numerous State and National Awards.

Oscar Wyatt - Oscar is Dave's 14 year old son and has spent much of his childhood on and about the South Coast of Tassie. As the cleanup falls on Easter this year he has jumped at the opportunity to come on the cleanup and visit the far west coast of Tassie for the first time.

Sam Loney - Sam owns and runs Mungermen designs and Gillespies Ginger Beer. Sam donated his services many years ago to print the shirts for the 2003 cleanup. Now 7 years later he can enjoy for the first time the amazing west coast scenery and waves.

Jo Goldfinch - Jo Goldfinch is the 3 time state surfing champ in Tassie and introduced surfing to our family in the late 80's. She has been a keen starter since her son Hamish joined us on the 2007 cleanup.

Spikey Riddoch - Spikey returns for his second cleanup trip and provides the emergency rescue and first aid support on the beach if needed due his long term involvement in the Tasmanian State Emergency Service. He is a keen bushwalker and videographer and is always on deck to count the rubbish.

Hamish Renwick - Hamish is the reigning junior Tasmanian Surfing Champion, he first came on the cleanup as a wide eyed 14 year old. You can see a copy of his 2007 Journal in the history pages.

Hania Watt - Hania is a local outdoor adventure guide and keen bushwalker who wil no doubt enjoy the chance to beachcomb the wild beaches of the World Heritage Area.

Dara Penfold - Dara is a former World Junior Surfing Champ from Tassie.  She has travelled the world surfing but this will be her first trip to the south west coast of her home state.


Tom Cox - Tim is a local surveyor and surfer who hails from the North West Coast.  He will be helping matt establish ground control points on the beaches to look and dune retreat.

Julian Bugg - Julian is a school teacher from the Friends school he is a furniture maker/designer and a keen musician. This is his first ever trip to the South West Coast of his home state.
